NEW BANDS TO THE U IN 2008
One thing that 2008 was full of was brand new bands. One of the quickest new bands to clime the popularity charts was new Tooth and Nail signee Children 18:3. They released their debut album in February.
Another new Tooth and Nail band who toured with Children 18:3 and had one of the most popular songs this Christmas was Capital Lights.
Last but not least for Tooth and Nail they also signed The Becoming this year and their new album “Volume 1,” was released in September.
Some other new bands to the U this year included Remedy Drive, who may or may not have taken the number one spot on TVU’s 30 Most Wanted.
North Carolina gave us Philmont this year and Seabird was one of the biggest new bands, and there album "Till We See the Shore," was released in June.
Also Tim Lambesis, lead singer for As I Lay Dying, started probably the most popular side project since Aaron Gillespie and The Almost, with Austrian Death Machine. |
BAD NEWS IN 2008
Kicking things off was the announcement that Still Remains was throwing in the towel. The band called it quits in late March but has since posted two b-sides tracks on their myspace page.
Another hardcore band that waved the white flag this year, much to my dismay, was Means.
In other bad band news, Haste the Day had a pretty rough year, even though they released one of the year’s best albums. They lost their lead guitarist Jason Barnes in July then just a few weeks ago they lost their drummer Devin Chaulk. Even after losing two founding members, the band says they are stronger than ever and are currently hunting for a new drummer.
In other big bad news…not like the wolf, Decyfer Down announced that lead singer Caleb Oliver was stepping down. The band has since found a replacement and will be releasing a new album in 2009. |
BIGGEST HEADLINES OF 2008
In great news for Flyleaf, their debut album went platinum selling more than 1,000,000 copies.
As I Lay Dying was nominated for a Grammy for the “Best Metal Performance” and they also picked up “Artist of the Year” from the San Diego Music Awards.
In other big news this year, after their debut album “End of Silence” released in June of 2006, Red announced a brand new album. RadioU exclusively premiered their new song “Fight Inside” which jumped to the number one spot on rock charts. “Innocence and Instinct” is due out February 10th.
Last but not least, some big news was announced for Family Force 5 and Copeland this year as they both signed to Tooth and Nail Records. |
BIGGEST TOURS OF 2008
This year the big tours were aplenty and one of the biggest was definitely the Creation Festival Tour. It included some of the biggest names from Creation Festival include TFK, Kutless, Fireflight, Run Kid Run, Capital Lights and tons more, and toured around the country.
Another big tour was the Anti-Mother Tour which featured Norma Jean, Haste the Day, The Showdown, and Oh, Sleeper and was probably the biggest hardcore tour of the year.
In other big tour news, Underoath took The Devil Wears Prada with them on their U.S. Headlining tour and sold out a ton of shows.
As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red hit the road together this year.
Skillet announced the Comatose Tour which featured TFK and Decyfer Down.
Last but not least, Demon Hunter toured this summer with the newly re-united Living Sacrifice. It was so good they made a CD from it. |
BIGGEST RELEASES OF 2008
Obviously making this year’s list for biggest albums was the brand new released from Family Force 5. They released their album “Dance or Die” late this summer and it made a lot of people happy.
Underoath released their much anticipated new album “Lost in the Sound of Separation,” this year and it debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top 200. That’s huge.
One of the biggest EP’s released this year came from Emery. After releasing a new album just one year before, “While Broken Hearts Prevail,” released in October and it’s amazing.
Some other great albums that came out this year include Fireflight’s new album “Unbreakable” which came with an amazing website.
Anberlin released their first album on Universal Republic called “New Surrender.”
House of Heroes released their album “The End is not the End” digitally and their debut single was the number one song of 2008 on RadioU. |
LOOKING FORWARD TO 2009
Some of the biggest buzz bands of 2008 have already promised new music for the New Year. One of those bands was The Devil Wears Prada. After touring with Underoath and re-releasing their album “Plagues” the band is currently writing a new record that will be released on Ferret Records “sometime” this year.
Also as you probably know, Red will be releasing their new album “Innocence and Instinct” in just about a month. In the mean time your can download two new songs on iTunes.
Skillet has been working hard the last couple months on their new album They recently started the recording process and they’ve been vlogging about it online.
After announcing their new album “Crash” would be out in September, Decyfer Down pushed their album back to 2009.
